Reasons Families Make the Switch
Homeschooling a high schooler who is also working, managing family responsibilities, or simply behind on credits is a significant undertaking. Many Indiana families carry this weight for years before reaching a point where they need a school that was built for exactly this situation.
Beacon Online Academy at Madison-Grant was built for the student who needs flexibility without losing structure. It is a tuition-free Indiana public high school focused on dropout prevention and credit recovery, serving students in grades 9 through 12. The school operates fully online, statewide. It is not a program for students who have given up. It is a school for students who have not.
For Indiana families asking how to switch to online school for a high schooler whose path to graduation has gotten complicated, Beacon offers a clear and dignified route forward. Learn more about the school's model and mission on the About Beacon Online Academy page.
How Enrollment Works in Indiana
Under Indiana Code Title 20, Article 33, homeschool programs in Indiana are classified as non-accredited nonpublic schools. Indiana does not require a formal withdrawal process when a family decides to enroll their student in a public school. Families apply to Beacon directly. That said, some local school districts maintain their own procedures, so it is worth confirming with your district before submitting an application, particularly if your student is switching mid-year.
Indiana's compulsory attendance law applies to students ages 5 through 18. Families switching mid-year should act promptly to ensure continuous enrollment coverage.
To enroll at Beacon, students must be Indiana residents in grades 9 through 12. General education students may enroll up to age 21; special education students may enroll up to age 22, and both may complete the school year if they age out during it. Required documents include a birth certificate, proof of Indiana residency, and current immunization records or a valid waiver. Additional documentation may be requested based on the student's enrollment situation.

Transferring Credits and Records
Indiana does not have a uniform statewide policy for accepting homeschool credits. Beacon reviews prior academic work individually during the enrollment process. Families should bring whatever records they have: completed curriculum documentation, any prior transcripts, or informal academic logs.
For families asking how do you switch to online school and not lose ground toward graduation, Beacon's counseling team works directly with each student to build a graduation plan based on what they have already completed and what remains. The school's credit flexibility model means students can also earn credits through non-traditional means, including work-based learning opportunities and career-connected experiences, which is relevant for students whose homeschool years included real-world learning that was not formally documented.
At enrollment, every Beacon student completes IXL diagnostic assessments in reading and math. These diagnostics do not determine credit but give the school's team a clear picture of where the student is academically, so instruction is targeted from day one.
What Students Can Expect in Online Public School
Beacon runs Monday through Friday, with attendance tracked daily according to Indiana state law. The standard daily commitment is six hours of engagement. Students who are managing work, childcare, or other significant life responsibilities may qualify for a shortened day of three hours, reviewed and approved by their guidance counselor on a case-by-case basis.
One of Beacon's most meaningful features is weekend flexibility. While weekday attendance is required, students can continue working on coursework over the weekend. Work completed on weekends counts toward the student's overall progress, which is particularly useful for students who need to get ahead or catch up at moments when their schedule allows.
Teacher Support
Beacon operates as a blended learning environment. Students participate in live instruction in a virtual classroom under teacher guidance, alongside independent work on a daily plan. Every student is assigned a dedicated Mentor and Success Coach for ongoing one-on-one and small-group check-ins. These staff members monitor progress, provide accountability, and work with students to keep them moving toward graduation. Teachers are accessible during school hours and prioritize relationship-building alongside instruction.
Live and Structured Independent Study
Beacon's flexible progression model is one of its defining features. Students move through coursework at a pace that matches their ability and circumstances. A student who is motivated and has the time can earn credits faster than a traditional school would allow, potentially graduating mid-year once credit and testing requirements are met. Students also have access to career-connected learning opportunities and work-based pathways that connect academic credit to real-world experience. Explore the school's academic structure and graduation requirements on the Beacon Online Academy academics page.
Student Activities
Beacon's student experience centers on mentorship, career exploration, and connection with peers who are focused on the same goal: getting to graduation. While the school does not offer traditional clubs or sports, students connect through mentorship relationships, career pathway conversations, and collaborative learning experiences that support their goals after they leave Beacon with a diploma in hand.
Tips for a Smooth Transition
Confirm with your local school district whether any steps are required before enrolling at Beacon. Indiana does not require state-level withdrawal paperwork, but individual districts sometimes have their own processes. Getting this clarity early prevents delays.
Gather whatever academic records you have before starting the enrollment application. Even informal homeschool documentation supports the credit review and graduation planning process. The IXL diagnostics at enrollment will provide an academic baseline, but prior records add important context.
If your student is managing work or childcare, discuss the time-waiver option with a counselor during enrollment. Beacon's shortened-day option exists specifically for students in these situations, and understanding it from the start helps families plan realistically. Access the school calendar and onboarding resources on the Beacon Online Academy parent and student resources page.
